"The planet is our home and it's our only one. There is nothing we can do to move to another planet in our solar system. We must take care of this one. If not, there is nowhere else for us to go.”
Marquita Jennings is the founder of Kita the Explorer. She is a travel adventure blogger, counselor and environmentalist.
Through her work, she raises awareness about environmental and conservation issues in the countries where she travels and teaches people how to be environmentally responsible tourists.
THIS IS HER STORY IN HER OWN WORDS (EDITED FOR SPACE AND FLOW).
I started Kita the Explorer in early 2016 at the encouragement of a couple of friends. One friend said, “OK, you go to so many amazing places, you should tell your stories through a blog.”
So, in July 2016, when I went on my first international solo trip to Belize, I decided to record my blog.
Through Kita the Explorer, I provide tips to my followers to help them with their travels, make them more comfortable or help them plan their trips.
When I went to Thailand on a work trip, one of my colleagues was telling me about an environmental agency that he's involved in. It kind of stuck out in my mind but I didn't pay much attention to it.
Then, we went to snorkeling in the Phi Phi Islands. I looked down and I saw the coral reef was dead from human activity, from boats just coming into the island.
That really traumatized me.
I started paying more and more attention at home and around the world to the things that people are doing that are harming the environment.
I’ve combined the environmental piece into my travels. Now, whenever I go on a trip, I must do something for the environment in that country.
I always say to people, "OK, you invite people into your house. You don't want them to just come in your house and just do whatever to it. You want them to be respectful in your home. Well, the planet is our home and it's our only one. There is nothing we can do to move to another planet in our solar system. We must take care of this one. If not, there is nowhere else for us to go.”
