I have this crazy dream that it is possible to live a life that feels purposeful.
I’ve felt purpose to varying degrees at different points in my 47 years.
Unfortunately, I lost that feeling of purpose a few years ago. I knew I had purpose at home, but the rest of the time I felt, well, purposeless.
I wasn’t connected to my work. I had spent so much of my life traveling around the world trying to make other people’s communities better, that I had no discernible purpose in my own community.
It got me thinking a lot about purpose. How we create a well-rounded feeling of purpose in our lives while we build careers and pay the bills, walk the dog, sit through endless hours of our kids’ roller derby bouts.
My answer is that purpose is in the big things and the little things. It’s in the art project we do with kids in our town. It’s in making sure our company treats everyone justly. It’s in designing a perfume line for people allergic to chemicals.
It’s strange. In my search for my own purpose, I’ve build a dream around helping people link their personal purpose to building a better world.
Purpose: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
